OnlyFans chatting: the complete guide to selling in the DMs
Most creators lose money in one place, and it isn't their content. It's the conversation. This is the whole picture of what chatting really is and how it turns subscribers into spenders, from the team that does it for a living.
What "chatting" actually means
"Chatting" is a soft word for the hardest and most valuable job on your page. It's every message a fan sends and every reply that decides whether they spend a dollar or drift off. It's the welcome message, the small talk, the tease, the price, the send, and the nudge three days later when they went quiet.
Creators tend to think of their page as content first: the photos, the videos, the sets. Fans don't experience it that way. They experience a person they can talk to. The content gets them in the door. The conversation is what they actually pay for, over and over, long after the first subscription.
The short version: content and traffic get you attention. Chatting is what converts that attention into money. Get the chatting wrong and even a big audience barely pays.
Why the sale happens in the conversation, not the caption
Here's the myth worth killing early: that a clever PPV caption is what sells the unlock. It isn't. A caption on its own converts a small slice of impulse buyers and nobody else.
The sale is built in the conversation around the send. There are two halves to it:
- The lead-up. The messages before the price appear. This is where you build the want, read what a particular fan actually responds to, and make the send feel like the natural next step instead of a cold ask.
- The follow-up. What you say to the fans who didn't buy the first time. Most creators send once and give up. A big share of your revenue is sitting in fans who needed one more message, a little reassurance, or a slightly different angle.
The price tag and the tease line are the smallest part. If the conversation around them is strong, an average caption still sells. If the conversation is weak, the best caption in the world won't save it.
Stop optimizing captions in isolation. Optimize the lead-up that earns the send and the follow-up that closes the fans who hesitated. That's where the money moves.
The anatomy of a sale: lead-up, send, follow-up
Almost every sale on your page, from a $10 unlock to a four-figure custom, follows the same three-beat shape.
1. The lead-up
You're not selling yet. You're finding out who this fan is, what they're into, and how they like to talk, then steering the mood toward the moment where a send makes sense. Rushing this is the single most common mistake. The fan can feel a cold pitch, and it kills the want you were supposed to be building.
2. The send
The tease and the price. By the time you get here, the work is mostly done. Your job is to make the offer feel like it fits the conversation you were just having, and to price it for this specific fan rather than blasting one price at everyone.
3. The follow-up
If they buy, you keep the momentum and set up the next one. If they don't, you don't panic and you don't spam. You come back later with a reason to re-open the thread. This is the beat that separates people who "do DMs" from people who actually sell, and it's almost entirely ignored.
The core skills (and where to go deeper)
Chatting well is really a stack of smaller skills. Here's the map. We're publishing a focused guide on each one.

Tools that make it easier
You don't have to write every message from a blank box. We publish a free library of scripts and templates you can adapt to your own voice, plus a free desktop app that keeps your best lines a keystroke away.
- Sexting templates and conversation starters to skip the blank-box problem.
- The RVG Chatting Assistant, our free app that types a proven line into the chat for you, one message at a time.
- The full creator tools library for PPV captions, mass messages, GFE, and more.
One rule: never paste a template word for word. Fans can feel a canned line. Use it as a jump-off and rewrite it so it sounds like you. A good template saves you the blank page, not the personality.
Doing it yourself vs handing it off
Plenty of creators run their own chatting and do it well. If that's you, take everything here and the free scripts and go. The honest truth about doing it yourself is that it works right up until it eats your whole day, because selling in the DMs is time you can't get back and it's happening around the clock.
That's the point where some creators hand the chatting off. If you ever consider it, the thing that matters is not coverage hours. It's trust: handing your account to people who won't get it banned, won't wreck the voice your fans fell for, and can genuinely make you more than you'd make alone. That's the whole job we do, for a flat cut, with your account staying yours.
